For some time I have experienced an odd, and annoying, pause at the end of the boot process. Right after the last thing, vixie-cron, loads ok I get a long pause before the system takes me into the login prompt.

I have no idea what is failing, they only clue is that the two last lines have no text bar the red [!!] at the end to say that something has failed.

How can I work out what is slowing down my gentoo? Using a boot logger, and looking at the kernel messages doesn't throw up anything unusual that I can see.

I think this may have started after an update to baselayout, but can't really remember. Any suggestions appreciated.

run 'dmesg' (without the quotes) or check your /var/log/dmesg file.

if you want to work with services that are loading at boot, run 'rc-update show boot'

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help, figured out the prob was straightforward poor thinking on may part.

The error not identifying itself on the boot screen was dhcp timing out for my wired network card. But because I have parallel startup on, lots of other stuff was loading while it was waiting. The text saying that dhcp was starting was way up the screen by the time it did time out.

Guess I'll remember that turning off parallel startup so things happen one after another can help in situation like this.
