I've been looking into qt and wxWindows and decided to write a gui app for linux. All I can come up with is a mame frontend, but there's already gxmame, qmamecat etc etc

So, are there any gui apps you'd like to see ? Something that would actually be usefull ...

any ideas welcome

cheers,
rich

A decent irc client would be a godsend. xchat is ok but its still no match for Mirc and all the QT based IRC clients are dreadful.

I think there a lot of very good irc client ( far better than mirc shit ) ,
my favorite is kvirc , throught irssi is very good too.

the problem is that none of them ( exept xchat ) run on picogui.

Woohoo.. a programmer for hire, for free? :) I'd like to see a nice TV guide application, something simple, clean and fast. I see there are a few on freshmeat, but most haven't been updated and the best looking one seems to be a Java based app.

Other than that, I don't know any GUI based applications I'd like to see. What I really would like to see is more GUI based customization/information visualization, much like the many for Windows (Samurize, Coolmod, etc.). Showing vital computer status or even weather right on the desktop.

I would second that request for a good IRC client... I still haven't found any in linux that I've liked as much as mirc. Also I would say an improved game server browser would be cool. XQF does the job but it has some aspects I dont really like.

The only app i want is a decent qt (not KDE) IDE. Something like MS Visual C++. Make forms and have an easy way to write code for them. qt-designer is a good form editor, but it sucks for coding.

geeeeez, I think he meant *small* apps.. u guys are suggesting IDE's and IRC clients! omfg... those are big projects and can't be done in a reasonable timeframe by one person.

Personally, I know what I'd like (might do it myself when I finish these 2 websites I'm workin on) is a GUI ytalk daemon... see, I love ytalk :) even tho it's old, it rocks!!! but when someone tries to ring me, if I haven't logged in into a console (ctrl alt-f1 f2 etc), it'll just say I am not accepting messages... the solution would be forking the ytalkd package and adding support for opening the GUI version of ytalk (ytalk -x I think) if you accept talking to that person

as Uranus said, something small. thats why I suggested a mame frontend, fairly simple to do.

xchat is more powerful than mirc scriptingwise and it's interface is cleaner imo (and is being worked on to be even more clean). It's just you need to get used to it a bit (or the other way around, mirc took a lot to get used to and now you have to revert that knowledge).

How do you figure that? From what I've seen, mIrc scripting is quite more powerful than xchat's.

On the other hand, I love xchat's interface compared to mirc's.

Oh yeah, kvirc is also very good, but it's pretty big :)

hmmm... i was taught that bitchx has a superior scripting to both ...but i wouldn't bet my name on it ...i don't irc much (actually almost not at all) and i never used irc-scripts ...never needed one (well ...except for that BitchX default ;))

....sorry, it's ot :]

So what you're saying is that Mirc's built-in scripting is more powerful than Python, Perl, TCL and C scripting in xchat alltogether?
I don't think so..

I would love to help with the IRC Client, QT preferably. I've been relatively fed up with all the ones I've tried. kvirc is nice, but it's like enormous bloatware, and it takes a month to configure. I dont know Gui Programming very well, but it would be fun to learn, if you're just learning to we could go about the same pace :)

I dont care about scripting, I just want something light, pretty, easy to configure, and somthing that supports dcc file transfers/chats elegantly.

Here I come with another idea: I would love to have an mplayer frontend. Not something like the gtk gui that is mplayer already has, but a kind of launcher. Something you use to create a huge command line by using only your mouse. What dvd::rip is to transcode, or gcombust to cdrtools.

I imagine an interface with several tabs. It would really be pure GUI code.

Feature could be:
- a lot of options (video filters, video/audio drivers, ...)
- a playlist for files (and their subtitles files)
- a dvd tab for choosing chapters/language/subtitles
- ...
- a profile saving/loading features for your usual uses
- a big play button at the bottom to launch mplayer

Anyway, sideburn-auto, even if you don't keep my idea, thanks for your proposition.

A frontend for ncftp would be sweet. Including a monitor so I can fire up a window and see at a glance how my ftp downloads are doing.

Sorry.. I should have rephrased.. I meant, mirc scripts, from what I've seen, are much more powerful from what I've seen in xchat script websites.

They have about the same scripting capabilities in the end --- xchat can use C-based modules, mirc can use dll's and COM parts (including plugins for various scripting languages, but that isn't necessary much with mirc's own extensive scripting language.)
