This is the third of three posts regarding error messages on bootup. I have just installed Gentoo 2006.0 (amd64) on new hardware, consisting of Asus A8N-VM CSM (which uses nvidia chips), 200 GB sata disk, 1GB ram, AMD64 3500. The system essentially works, and I have got networking, Xorg and a few applications (Fluxbox, Firefox-bin) up and running. But there are several error messages seen upon booting. They may be independent of each other so I put them in separate posts. This is the third; the following messages appear:
Code: | Could not detect clock by any known means |
or some such; it flashes past very quickly. This is followed by suggestions about debugging, then
Code: | Failed to set system clock to hardware clock |
After this message the system continues to boot and can be used. The very start of dmesg shows:
Code: | Bootdata ok (command line is root=/dev/sda6 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1280x1024-16@60 splash=silent,theme:livecd-2006.0 quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1)
Linux version 2.6.15-gentoo-r5 (root@compi) (gcc version 3.4.4 (Gentoo 3.4.4-r1, ssp-3.4.4-1.0, pie-8.7.8)) #3 Mon Mar 20 19:50:22 Local time zone must be set--see zic manu |
Have I missed something in the kernel compilation? _________________ "The Internet is not a literacy-free-zone"

You should be able to scroll back the console to see what the exact error message was. You can do that with shift-pageup and shift-pagedown. Furthermore, the kernel log might have the message logged aswell. The location of the kernel log depends on which logger you use, but at least with syslog-ng it's located at /var/log/messages. Also, restarting the clock service with /etc/init.d/clock restart command should probably print you the same error message again. _________________ Temperatures |

Thanks for that advice. The messages are:
Code: | * Cannot access the Hardware Clock by any known method.
Use the --debug option to see the details of our search for an access method.
* Failed to set system clock to hardware clock
* Failed to start /etc/init.d/clock |
Where do I set the --debug option? I tried
Code: | /etc/init.d/clock start --debug |
but that did not work. I do not see any obvious place to set it in /etc/conf.d/clock. _________________ "The Internet is not a literacy-free-zone" |

After following your advice and that in other parts of the Forum, I found that it was the kernel which had not been properly configured.
Code: | Character Devices -----------
[*] Realtime Clock Support |
was all that was necessary. Elementary! _________________ "The Internet is not a literacy-free-zone" |
