Alsamixer prob

When i try alsamixer i get this : alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I followed the manual on HOWTO install ALSA. I emerged alsa-utils. I ran alsaconf. And still nothing. (I tried to killall udevd; udevstart, but still it doesn't work.

lspci -v | grep -v audio : 00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)
Subsystem: Ensoniq Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI128

have you tried to run alsamixer as root? If it is posible then just

i was logged as root : /

i have the same problem too
everything done with the alsa howto...
