Hi,

I've got a Promise FastTrak sata-controller, which works fine with Knoppix. Booting from it is also ok, but the kernel doesn't find my root partition (kernel panic; please specify a root-device etc...).

But: I've definitively compiled my sata-driver statically into the kernel (not as module) and have my reiserfs compiled in. Under Knoppix the ata1-device is mapped to /dev/sda1 which is in my boot-line in grub via: root=/dev/sda1. What can I do?

Best regards.

Do you have the 'right' sata drivers installed?
I have the same sata-controller (on my Asus A8V-Deluxe). I use the following driver:
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
    SCSI device support  --->
        SCSI low-level drivers  --->
            <*> Serial ATA (SATA) support
            <*>   Promise SATA TX2/TX4 support

Not "Promise SATA SX4 support" and not the "Support for SATA" under "ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support".
If you are useing this driver, could you paste your relevant section of grub.conf?
