xorg.conf problem

X works fine for me if I don't have an xorg.conf file. There must be some defaults that it picks up when xorg.conf is missing. Is there any way to find out what those defaults are and put them in an xorg.conf file?

if I cp xorg.conf.example xorg.conf, when I try to start X, I get a fatal error "no screens found." I'm running a new Toshiba laptop, so the screen and keyboard are built-in and don't have names that I'm aware of. I have no idea what the horizontal and vertical sync values are.

I tried xorgconf and xorgcfg as suggested in another thread, no joy. xorgcfg actually throws a segmentation fault whenever I try to set up my mouse.

So if X works fine if I don't have xorg.conf, why do I care? Because my mouse doesn't. It'll act like a normal 2-button mouse, but the scroll wheel doesn't work, and the only way I know of to make the scroll wheel work is to edit xorg.conf, which means it has to exist ><

A brand-new Toshiba Satellite...M70, I think. The guy at the store called it an A100, but that apparently doesn't exist.

Pentium-M processor 1.86 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and an ATI card. It was the only one I could find in-stock that didn't use shared VRAM, and I knew that Gentoo was not meant for crappy systems, so I splurged for everything I thought I'd need to get a machine where I could learn Gentoo well enough that I could gradually start to phase Windows out of my life for everything except Final Fantasy XI and WoW

Although your exact model may or may not be there, you should be able get a working xorg.conf from a similar system.
(Usually minor version are the same or extremely close hardware. eg M70 = faster M65)
