I have a dual Athlon MP 2000+ on a MSI K7 Master motherboard.
Within my .config file for my kernel, I currently have the CPU type selected as Pentium III (I haven’t changed this, so I assume it comes from the default install of gentoo?)
I’ve tried to change this type recently, to Athlon MP, to match my processor type, but the machine hangs immediately on bootup, just a black screen, with no kernel messages.
I’m trying to squeeze as much from the system as possible, so it would be good to change this to the correct CPU type…?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I haven't understood if you have compiled your kernel for Pentium3 (having an Athlon) and now you cannot boot to recompile with the correct flag, or you compiled with the (supposed) right flag and it doesn't boot either.
btw. you can use the installation CD to boot, then chroot in your system, env-update && source /etc/profile, go in your kernel sources directory and reconfigure/recompile/reinstall it. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. |

sure, I've been running fine and have been tweaking the kernel in an attempt to get my Palm Tungsten working (another story!) ... the cpu setting since the start has been Pent III, I thought I change it to Athlon MP to match my processors, but the machine won't boot if I do. If I change the cpu back to Pentium III everything is fine again....
