Hi all,

Just got a printer for home : Lexmark Optra E321 that is Postscript level2 and works perfectly acording to linux printing.org.

The printer is plugged via parallel port to a SMC Barricade 7004 ABR that makes it available through IPP on the network

I installed it without problem on my wife's computer (Ubuntu 5.10) and It works.

On my gentoo system it is not so easy !

I install it with Kdeprint. (tryed Ipp, local parallel port and local usb port) and when trying the test page, the line led blinks just like the printer was receiving data and then stops.

A look at /var/log/cups/error_log shows :
Code:

The debug level is set to "debug"

For information (when plugged to the concerned port)
Code:
 cat test.txt > /dev/lp0

or
Code:
 cat test.txt > /dev/usb/lp0

works.

I tried to re-emerge cups (and deleting /etc/cups) as well as ghostscript.
Here are my emerge info output

Have you tried stripping down the driver (ppd)? I would back it down to a raw print device (just to see if you get anything), then set to a generic postscript device, and work my way up the chain like that. You can use the KDE print manager for this, or the web interface (I would use the web interface, just to rule-out other issues).

Since your system "sees" the printer, I would guess it would be something with your ppd. You can go to http://www.linuxprinting.org to download ppd's or you can use foomatic to generate your own. (if you find your ppd is bad). Or copy the settings from your wife's comptuer...

Give those a try... Hope it helps.

I tried with "generic postscript" and did not work.

Then I tried "Raw" and it DID work

Thank for your advice !

Anayway. Should I post a bug since the driver designer for that printer does not work ?

You might just want to try new drivers. Maybe use foomatic. Or go to linuxprinting.org. If they steer you wrong, then you could contact them. I don't know if filing a bug report on Gentoo for a "broken" ppd would produce much benefit. Good luck.
