I'm running gentoo on an AMD64x2. I have a gigabit network card and run a bunch of services like ssh, imap, http etc. My server had been fine, untouched for months but suddenly I couldn't access it externally. When I accessed it locally I realised that the link lights on the network card/switch were out. Doing:

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart

Kicked things back to life, after some delay at the dhcpd stage. It was then up for a day or so and I lost eth0 again. Then up for a day or two and gone again. This brings us up to the current time.

Is there any possibility this could be a software problem? Or is my network card flaking out on me? Is there any way to diagnose this?

You'll probably want more details on my setup, but I can't remember any commands to get useful details. Please tell me how to get the info when you ask for it.

edit: [SOLVED] : it was a hardware problem; replacing the network card solved the issue.

Does it say anything in dmesg when you lose eth0? dmesg is the command.

Try checking cable connections. Honest, sometimes it can just be loose enough to be within contact... or it could be a hardware issue. If software was untouched and the situation you have happens, it's very likely a hardware problem. Check the cabling first though, as in, remove them, look at it, plug it in tighter.

PS: You don't really have to post all the 9817203987123 lines of link up/down messages... could condense it by saying you got those lines repeatedly ;)

I don't think the clock skew relates to this issue though, but I could be wrong.
