My clock is constantly getting behind, so much that I have to reset the time at least once a day. I know about installing NTP and am going to, but the clock is getting way too far off way too quickly. Anyway, the following message appears in /var/log/messages and in dmesg:

Code:

Losing too many ticks!
TSC cannot be used as a timesource.
Possible reasons for this are:
  You're running with Speedstep,
  You don't have DMA enabled for your hard disk (see hdparm),
  Incorrect TSC synchronization on an SMP system (see dmesg).

Can anypoint point me on where to go? I do have -d1 in my /etc/conf.d/hdparms, so DMA should be enabled.

Then are you in one of the following conditions?

The first is if you have a pentium 4m, or a pentium m (centrino); the second if you have more than one processor, or a dual core processor.

Bye

I'm running a 2.4Ghz Celeron, so everything is built for Pentium4, but not Pentium4 M. It's not dual-core and there are not multiple chips in the box.

Then check if your dma is really on:
Code:
# hdparm -d /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 using_dma    =  1 (on)

Anyway, maybe you should activate HPET in your kernel (Processor type and features-->HPET Timer Support), but I don't know if you have one.

Bye
