Hiho,
I emerged kde 3.5.2 (old one, is 3.4.1) and KDM doesn't start
rc.conf:

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
XSESSION="kde-3.5"

I can startup kde via startx but don't know where I have to edit the displaymanger setting?
I don't have a .xessions in my homedir ...and I don't found anything interesting in the logfiles, but I must say that I'm not sure where I have to search.
Can anybody give me a hint?

What's the output you get to console when KDM attempts to start?
Also, you should change
to
| Code: | | XSESSION="kde-3.5.2" |
If I recall correctly, the full version number is the proper way.

i guess the xsession setting is correct (kde-3.5). if i change it to "kde-3.5.2" and use startx a standard x manager is displayed.
gentoo says during the bootprozess, that kdm is up?!?

A couple of things:
1.) Are you sure it's not your Xorg config file? What are the contents of the Xorg log file?
2.) Can you manually begin KDM from the console?
It's a little hard to help diagnose the issue w/o this information. 
P.S. -- If you're unawares, the Xorg server log file is usually stored in /var/log.
