I have an installed printer, and for the life of me I cannot get it to print. My buddy and I share it, so I know it works. It recognizes its on the port, and says it is ready and when I print I can use the CUPS tool to see the queued jobs, but it just wont print. Very frustrating. I used all the drivers all with the same result. Anyone have any ideas.
Thanks.

You know, I have that exact same type of printer configured with the same driver and everything. It works fine for me.

Ok, enough sarcasm. Details please.

It's a HP deskjet 5850. I'm using the new HP printer driver. The output of the cups utility is as follows:
Quote:
Deskjet5850-9 Test Page root 15k cancelled at Wed 05 Apr 2006 12:56:16 AM EST

Note that I did not cancel it, it cancelled itself.
When I hit restart job I get the following:
Quote:
Error:

client-error-not-possible

The printer state shows:
Quote:
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.

This make sense to anyone?

Does it work if you try to print as root?

Edit: never mind, it looks like you did from your output.

I get the same result printing from root as I do from a user.

When you say "cups utility" do you mean the HTML interface (http://localhost:631)?

When you bring up the HTML interface and click on "Printers," what does the printer state say?

While you are there double-check and make sure the device URI is correct.

Please post the output of
Code:
emerge hpijs -pv
(or emerge hplip -pv depending on which package you installed)

I used to have the same problem with my Epson printer.

I had to re-emerge 'ghostscript-esp' with activated 'cups' use flag (after the printer configuration).
After restarting 'cupsd', everything worked fine.

Re-emerging 'ghostscript-esp' worked. These forums are invaluable. Thanks so much.
