...and I'm supposedly doing it the easy way, with genkernel. But it's obviously not auto-detecting very well, because I see a lot of ipw2100 error messages, and I don't even want ipw2100 support in my kernel. My wireless card uses ipw2200.

Here's what I have:

EDIT: genkernel.log is too big to fit in one post, so I uploaded it here

1) Is it safe to turn off my computer after genkernel fails, or is my old kernel still active until genkernel completes?

2) would it be easier to just compile the kernel manually as per the HOWTO on gentoo wiki?

Citizen Bleys,

First, genkernel does not auto detect, it compiles a general purpose very small kernel and almost every module in the kernel tree.
Detecting the right bits is done at module load time, which is a waste of disk space and comppile time.

If you want to understand whats going into your kernel, do it by hand, if the semi automatic genkernel ve time/space seems like a good trade off to you, stick with genkernel.

You may run genkernel with the -menuconfig option, so you can tune the configuration before genkernel does the build and install.

Hey

Just shooting in the dark - try to enable 802.11 stack in Network Menu.

Its just net/80211.h errors that make me think that way....

Hope it helps,
Alex.

Well, I managed to shatter my kernel beyond all recognition, and now Linux has become unbootable. Time for a reinstall!

I'm living up to the "n00b" title :)

If buy "reinstall" you mean, "wipe the disks and start from scratch", that's unnecessary. Just boot from the liveCD, mount your partitions, chroot into your system, and reconfigure/rebuild your kernel.

And you might consider compiling it manually this time.

It was a manual recompile that shattered it beyond recognition. I actually got a buddy who has done manual recompiles on gentoo before to SSH into my system and gave him my root password.

It still not that bad, you can always recompile kernel from clean - just do make clean (and if you're really want then also make depclean) and start over with default .config).

Just a side note - until you got some kind of optimized kernel, you should not override a simple working one.

A reinstall got me a working kernel and a working xorg.conf :)

Good, but it was also unnecessary. I promise you that.
