My system crapped out during emerge system. How can I get back to where I was at? It took too long to get that far and I sure as heck dont want to start over. Hope I dont have to. Does anyone know what kernel the live-cd is using?

If you were doing it using the terminal, just type
Code:
emerge --resume --skipfirst
(the skipfirst part is to skip the package that failed). If you were using the LiveCD installer, try opening a terminal, CHROOTing to your gentoo install and typing the command I gave to you above. It would look like this:

Code:
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update && source /etc/profile
emerge --resume --skipfirst

How do I finish the rest of the install after I do that. Does it finish the install process or do I have to go and command line it afterwards.

When "emerge " is run it makes a tmp file that it uses to keep track of what its doing. If your in the middle of a big emerge, lots of pkgs, and a pkg fails to emerge and stops that tmp file is still there. To make use of it you HAVE TO RUN emerge --resume to save it and use it. If you run emerge <anything else> the old tmp tmp file is wiped and a new one made. In this tmp file emerge keeps track of what its emergeing and what still has to be emerged. So if your 33 files into a 100 pkg emerge and it stops, to resume emergeing pkg33 and the rest "emerge --resume". If you want to skip pkg33 then " emerge --resume --skipfirst " . You should first try "emerge --resume" if it dies again then try the "skipfirst" option.

After it finishes the emerge, read the manual. It'll tell you all the steps to finish the install.

I did a test run on both gnome and kde. I personally love Gnome and give it my vote, but kde is also "alright", alot of nifty tools, but bloated.
