|
|
When I try and rip DVDs with this drive, I will go along fine and then suddenly something hits a snag, the drive drops out of DMA mode and my whole system crawls. Sometimes it will work all the way through. When I rip with my USB2 DVD drive at the same time I almost always get the problem (the drive with the problem is an internal IDE drive).
DMA and unmaskirq were not enabled on this drive by default; I had to add an entry into hdparm.conf. If anyone knows of a diagnostic I can look at that will shed some light on why DMA/unmaskirq weren't enabled by default I would appreciate it.
Here's the output of hdparm -i:
Code: |
hdparm -i /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Model=SONY CD-RW/DVD-ROM CRX310EE, FwRev=SDK3, SerialNo=2006011900006280
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=yes, tPIO={min:227,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
AdvancedPM=no
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-5
* signifies the current active mode
|
And here's what I get in dmesg after the failure kicks in (keep in mind, it goes along fine for a while):
Code: |
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
hda: DMA disabled
hda: ATAPI reset complete
|
Has anyone ever seen this? Anyone know of a log I can check to see the kernel's reason for not enabling DMA on the drive by default? Thanks for your time. |

It doesn't do it at all on windows, and it does it more often on linux when I do stuff with my other drive at the same time, so I think it is more likely to be a problem with interrupts or something else. |

I don't think so, as I mentioned above, one of the drives (one not having problems) is a USB2 drive. Further, my disk drive is on SATA. |
