Using Bitstream Vera Sans Mono Font in Emacs

I would like to use the nice looking Bitstream Vera Sans Mono font in Emacs. It's not difficult to get Emacs to use it, getting it to look good is. Emacs doesn't use hinting (as far as I can see) and doesn't respect the subpixel anti-aliasing settings. Is it possible to get Emacs's font to look as good as the rest of Gnome? If not, I need another Ruby editor for Gnome (not vim).
