My system has started experiencing problems with xorg|gnome and pasting from the clipboard. When pasting (via ctrl-v, Edit->Paste menu or the middle mouse button), the application will crash with no output in the xsession-errors file.

Not all applications are having this problem, for example evolution works fine, but gnome-terminal, firefox, epiphany, text editor and dictionary are amongst the applications that do have this problem.

I'm not sure when this behaviour started. I'm using gentoo AMD64.

If you open up a plain xterm, and launch one of the crashing programs from there, is there any output on the console when it crashes? Not all X errors get logged to xsession-errors...

Thanks for your suggestion ectospasm.

Due to a power cut, my system was restarted and lo and behold, the problem has gone!

I still don't have a clue as to why it exibited that problem though.

As much as a lot of us would hate to admit it, sometimes following the advice of our Windows brethren works. You may have been able to get away with shutting down the X server and restarting (whether killing it by CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE or simply logging out). Since the problem was transient, we'll consider it solved. If it happens again, try my original suggestion, so we can get a clue as to what's going on.

i've got the same problem, but it affects different applications such gedit, bug-buddy, bluefish; but not the terminal, scite or any web browser...
restarting the x server doesn't change this behaviour and starting the app from the terminal doesn't say anything when the crash happen...
i've got gnome 2.14.1 installed and i'm getting mad with this :( ...help...

addendum:
i've noticed that even inserting or selecting (not appending or pasting) a text in the apps crash them...

downgrading gtk+ from 2.8.18 to 2.8.12 solved the problem... :?
