yes, mark_alec, i have configured Xorg. i followed the handbook and configured everything.
just now i reboot again into gentoo, make some changes in my xorg.conf to test run startx, now after i startx, the xorg started perfectly, with fglrxinfo, i got the ATI drivers loaded without problem.
however, when i want to perform startkde with root, it say: "no command found!"
after all, i switch to second terminal, use root again to issue startkde, now it says: "xsetroot unable to open display '', cannot connect to x server....
how? what can i do? |

Are you using nvidia, composite.
If yes upgrade nvidia to the latest driver - ~arch with all the needed packages also unstable.
remove the composite extension if you are using it and pray
from your discription this looks like the infamous "x.org locks up, i could only move my mouse and sometimes could kill it from ssh, if not I need a hard reset" problem _________________ "I knew when an angel whispered into my ear,

Have you set XSESSION in /etc/rc.conf to the correct value? |

What version of KDE are you using? I'd also remove startkde from your xinit/xsession file, since I remember reading somewhere this causes issues with KDE... Works for fluxbox though (I recently abandoned KDE in favor of fluxbox, and havent regretted it).
Try setting this in your rc.conf (this is assuming you are using KDE 3.5.2, for 3.4, you probably juse need 'kde' as your XESSION value):
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
XSESSION="kde-3.5.2" _________________ I am not anti-systemd; I am pro-choice. If being the latter makes you feel that I am the former, then so be it. |

Did you try the whole path? Also, I don't think you need to run it as root. Set it up as a normal user following this page. Only exception is, put the full path of the startkde file.
When you get to this part, put the full path in.
Code: | echo "exec /usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde" > ~/.xinitrc |

yup, guys, thanks for reply..
i had tried all your suggestions, and it don't works... T.T
i am using the latest gentoo-source 2.6.16-r7, kde3.5.2...
fyi, this is my another try...
i first commented out the XSESSION and Display Manager in the rc.conf,
then i startx to get into the ugly xterm,
from there, i verify that my ati-drivers works, dri also works...
then i simply issue: startkde
guess what? i can see the kde logo pop up and start loading....but after it loads to around 80%, where the whole screen is about to change, it hangs!!!!! my mouse can move, but i cannot kill it, cannot return to console....i have to hard reset my laptop.... T.T
please, anyone have idea on this? (if you need to see my xorg.conf, pls do teach me how to post it up using the console, because i have no gui browser, only have 'links', cannot copy and paste... -.- ) |

How to post xorg.conf
1) Run (at the console) rc-update add sshd default (might just be ssh). You can then reboot, or, run /etc/init.d/sshd start as ROOT.
2) Download to your windows box PuTTy.
3) Use putty to SSH into your linux box (by IP) and you cant hen copy from the terminal into your web browser. (run ifconfig to see your ip).
I do have a question. This sounds like the HELL I went through with my ATi drivers. Are you using ATi closed source drivers? If so I recomment upgrading to 8.25.18, they are way better than the 8.24.8's I was using. You might have to unmask them in your /etc/portage/package.keywords file.
Code: |
# grep ati-drivers /etc/portage/package.keywords
x11-drivers/ati-drivers ~amd64
|
Now, replace ~amd64 with your proper arch (x86, amd64, etc... All x86_64 installs use amd64 for packages, so, if you're like me and running an Intel EM64T processor, you need amd64). _________________ I am not anti-systemd; I am pro-choice. thanks a lot RazielFMX, but i think your methods of ssh can't apply to my situation. because i only have 1 laptop to connect to the internet, and i don't have other box to connect to... T.T
and yes, i do using the ATI Drivers, and i am using the 8.25.18 version. i admit that it does "better" than last time, because last time when i use it, my X11 can't even start, now it at least start my x with the ugly xterm.. -.-
so, any more ideas on? do you think is it related to my ati drivers?
ok, here i hope to get something confirm first, this is what i've done after succesfully boot my box into gentoo.
1. i emerge xorg-x11 (i think the version is 6.8.x, because i did not unmask it to use x11 7.0 or 7.1 )
2. then i emerge ati-drivers
3. use the "aticonfig" to generate the xorg.conf
4. make some changes in xorg.conf to get my mouse works.
is the above process correct? will my xorg.conf being generated correctly? i have this doubt because the xorg.conf that generated by the "aticonfig" seems very short compare to last time i use fglrxconfig.
ok, after i verify that i can startx, i emerge kde-meta, and it gets me to the situation now, which HANGS on startkde. T.T |

Ok, you will need to modify the keyboard, mouse, and monitor sections. I recommend you do the following:
run xorgconfig, answer the questions. Then, save this somewhere. Take note of your monitor, mouse, and keyboard settings, and your fonts/files section.
Then, take a look at this, and save what you want (this is my xorg.conf):
NOTE: Ignore the what seem to be commented out duplicate screens, monitors, devices, etc... This is my dual head set up that choked under 8.24.8. You can leave my fonts settings even if you dont have all these fonts, you'll just get warnings in your xorg log.
Also, you should verify your PCI BUS address (lspci, it should be the first if you get two ATi listings).

RazielFMX, thanks again for your post.
fyi, i have done with re-configuration of xorg.conf, and also when i startx, i manage to run x smoothly. when i glxgears, i got quite a good result, over 3400 fps!
but, still to no avail, my startkde still hangs me up! T.T
i heard that kde 3.5.3 is out, is that a need for me to emerge the new one? or can i just turn to gnome to try out? will my gentoo crash emerging two wm? |

hey guys, just now i got some weird error message when i enable "kdm" and XSESSION="kde-3.5"
when i startx under a normal user, the x started then immediately shutdown....this is the error message in the console:
"/home/user/.xinitrc: line 1: exec : startkde : not found"
what does it mean startkde not found??!! any idea? |

haha...i found the solution already... i have to include the full path to /usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde in order to make it works...
anyway, now i can see the loading screen of the kde, it loads all with no problem....but when it comes to "Restoring Sessions" 0 % , it just hang there!!!! my mouse still can move, but the kde just freeze there. Ctrl + Alt + Backspace cannot terminate it....
how? any idea on this???? |

I don't know about gnome, but try removing your kde directory $HOME/.kde If there's no kde directory, it can't restore, so maybe it won't hang... |
