I have a following scheme WLAN router and then Linux and Windows machine with wlan connection to router.
Yesterday I installed exceed on the windows machine but unfortunately I am not able to open the connection.

I modified the xdm-config so that I have:
!DisplayManager.requestPort: 0

In Xaccess I have:
* #any host can get a login window

Normally this should be enough - I set from xconfig window single and XDMCP-query and enter IP-address
of the linux machine. No luck - when starting with exceed screen remains blank. I am able to ping to the IP
so connection is there.

One thing I still need to try is to enter IP and name of the windows machine on /etc/hosts but otherwise I
am a bit stuck  - any tips? what could I be missing from gentoo side - the previously mentioned
measures have up to now sufficed with other distros.

X servers normally listen on port 6000
have you checked that this port is open?
on windows:
Code:
C:\> netstat -a

you can even try to telnet to the exceed server on port 6000 to see if you can connect

nowadays, X servers seem to be configured to start without listening on a port, by default
this is a good thing, until you need it :)

on your gentoo box, you can find the following in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers:
Code:

$ cat /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
:0 local /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp

maybe exceed has some similar startup argument

Well I don't think that exceed is the problem here. I have installed that one often
enough to know the step needed on exceed side to get it running. I think the problem
could be on windows firewall on F-Secure. I am also not sure whether the router comes
into question as a problem source. Normally it should not since it's about "internal" network
but it, of course, blocks the requests coming from outside.

How would that netstat command show that it is not listening to a port? (Sorry to ask a windows question here :))

So it is not likely that the connection is not allowed from gentoo side?

Ok one thing happens - at least in gentoo telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 6000 on to own ip address brings connection refused.
Does this indicate that the port is closed in gentoo? How can I open it to couple of known IPs?
