horde problems

I'm trying to install horde and im getting theses errors

Notice: Only variable references should be returned by reference in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/horde/lib/Auth.php on line 80

Notice: Only variable references should be returned by reference in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/horde/lib/Prefs.php on line 144

I have tried every suggestion in past discussions on this forum. which include:

changing the /var/php/apache-php4/php.ini
include_path=".:/usr/lib/php"
&
error_reporting= E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE

and other varries things like changing the dev-php/php & mod_php. I don't know what's wrong and why it will not work.
this what I'm using

horde-2.2.9
horde-imp-3.2.8
horde-pear-1.3-r3
horde-turbra-1.2.5
dev-php/php-4.4.0=pl1-gentoo
mod_php-4.4.0-r9

So far all i got working are the horde/test.php & horde/imp/test.php

Horde-2x is a bit old... I also had these issues with php5 and an older horde!
I only can tell you that Horde 3.1.1 (Which is now stable marked) works very fine for me with php5!
