Doesn't give some performance gain if in a single cpu one "make" does compiling (running gcc atually) and an other does disk io (other stuff "make" does except calling gcc)?
In most of the time two paralell GCCs will run, of course.

or this is why we "single core: MAKEOPTS="-j2""?

I'm running dual "single core" processor. So i should be using

MAKEOPTS="-j4"

cheater, can you tell me where you got this info from, wanna read more on them.

Just started building gcc and all my patches are failing to compile with
Code:

PATCH COMMAND:  patch -p0 -g0 -E --no-backup-if-mismatch < /var/tmp/portage/gcc-4.1.1_pre20060511/work/patch/04_all_gcc42-boehmgc-include.patch

==============================================
can't find file to patch at input line 3
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:

I managed to solve this, with help of [profile=predatorfreak]predatorfreak[/profile] by selecting intel cpu support additionally.

I started some weeks ago with conrad guide 2.6.2. After some work I have a great working system now! Thx!

Now my question:
Would it be possible to include in the next update of the guide new overlays for glibc, qt and kdelibs? Because gentoo portage offers now a higher revision of the packages and Im afraid when I emerge world I loose alle the crazy features of the overlay.
thx again

cheater

please check if in portage-configs
you are using correct glibc ebuild

when i'm following your guide emerge takes glibc-2.4-r3

well, what I did was mask the glibc-2.4-r3 package and used the glibc-2.4-r2 package, but then I couldnt download the patches. I think the server is down for the moment. So i deleted the glibc's ebuild and used the portage ones instead, and later when the server is up, I will compile my packages back again. :o

for people having trouble with emerge splashutils (error in daemon.c:529 with some undeclared stuff)

try

Code:

wget no.oldos.org//files/2.6.17-rc3-no2/broken-out/config-nr-tty-devices-r1.patch
mv config-nr-tty-devices-r1.patch /usr/src/
cd /usr/src/linux
patch -Rp1 < ../config-nr-tty-devices-r1.patch
emerge splashutils

Just updated to 2.6.4, waiting on gcc 4.1.1 to compile. I have a few questions. I'm still learning so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Is it me or has portage gotten slower especially when calculating dependencies? Ive read that reiser4 could be the cause and possibly moving portage to a ext3 partiton would speed it up? Not shure there. Also has MAKEOPTS become depreciated? I've tried to put it in my make.conf and I get errors from portage, or somethings wont compile. Thanks.

Portage is naturally slow, because of python. Reiser4 isn't the cause, but if your io sched isn't set right it could be. Read the new section I added, I think it is 9.5, about io sched selection. Ext3 would slow it down compared to reiser4 ;), and Makeopts isn't deprecated, but it is not needed, and has no real effect unless you have 2 cpus, or dual-core. (it will run a make on each core) if you set it with a standard single core processor, it will run two makes, but use equal power, so it will balance out and give you no performance gain.

with makeopts it is
1 per physical cpu
1 per core
example:
single core: MAKEOPTS="-j2"
dual core: MAKEOPTS="-j3"
two single core: MAKEOPTS="-j4"
two dual core: MAKEOPTS="-j6"
quad single-core: MAKEOPTS="-j8"
quad dual-core: MAKEOPTS="-j12"

For a single core it has no logical effect, and for dual core it runs a make on each core, so it will go faster.

what about Pentium4 HT CPUs? i heard once that -j3 does have a performence gain

Pentium4 HT CPUs are considered dual-core (they aren't really dual cores, nor do they have any advantages over a non -HT) so -j3 is the option to choose.

This information is very, very briefly described at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=5#doc_chap5
-----
GCC ebuild needs fixing again, as that is frequent.

Overlays need to be updated also.

All the updates will be added in 2.6.5, temporarily you may mask glibc 2.4-r3, with =sys-libs/glibc-2.4-r3 in /etc/portage/package.mask.

and what's about the
Code:

stat "/usr/local/portage/sys-devel/gcc/files/awk/fixlafiles.awk-no_gcc_la" sikertelen: No such file or directory

glibc issue?
why is that "-no_gcc_la" there?

ok, i will mask portage glibc-2.4-r3

i emerged nxsty glibc-2.4.90.20060511
seems nice
but i don't know how to do Bdirect hashval and zdynsort without breaking other stuff
what about kdelibs?
Code:

omerta ~ # eix -e kdelibs

that will fix it, but I reccomend copying it rather than linking it.

@ blade, I was sleepy the other day and accidently asked for your make.conf insted of asking for your xorg.conf. BTW, I think its better for you to search in the xorg lockups thread for better support. I had this problem the other day and it turned to be the fonts which not letting my root account to startx. I managed to solve it by entering into the font directory and i run
Code:
mkfontdir

which worked for me.
