i 'migrated' successfully from the old guide, will try your new kernel now.
besides that all those time-intensive warnings are gone.
i think most of the modular x-11 unmasking isn't needed anymore.

That is somewhat strange, I emerged libbonobo fine (just now), possibly try emerge sync, then rebuild orbit

Also, you say stable from portage, just to make sure you are ~x86 and NOT x86 ;)

i am not all ~x86, i am mostly x86, and ~x86 in the packages that i "need" to be ~x86 :)

i was hoping you gave me a hint, something like "yadda has to be version X for you to make libbonobo emerge" :? :cry:

Try building it without "kdenewldflags" use flag enabled.

Try tuning down your CFLAGS, they are a bit excessive. Why are you using '-s' in your MAKEOPTS? Is that a valid option? Also, '-momit-leaf-frame-pointer' is a bad option.

I see portage now wants to emerge gcc-4.2.0. Should this be masked so it won't emerge?

Might want to correct your 2.6.1 Installation Guide to remove "rc-update add coldplug default" since it is supposed to be replaced by udev-089-r2 and should not be installed.

No, it doesn't, the gcc-svn-update gets the latest from svn and creates a snapshot ebuild :)

However, in package.unmask, you need to change >=sys-devel/gcc-4.1, to =sys-devel/gcc-4.1*, because the wrong decision (IMHO) was made when gcc 4.2 was even added to portage.

yes, you are right but you may use a portage snapshot of gcc as described in point 8.3 (gcc-svn-update)

People with problems compiling KDE packages: I found that several packages wouldn't compile unless I set

Yes sir, all these patches being added/fixed upstream. That is why I offer the choice of 4.1.1 or 4.1.0

I need to edit the ebuild to exclude that patch, or you can do it yourself and re-diges it, you should be able to figure it out by taking a look at the ebuild ;)

I will fix it tomorrow, and change the package.unmask entry :roll:

From the ChangeLog:
Quote:

4) Removed -Bdirect, -hashvals, and -zdynsort from ldflags

What happened with those ldflags? did the patches for binutils got removed as well? did your -O12 -fomg-optimize --enble-speed machines crashed unexpectedly or what?

Well, certain things have been keeping me busy today, and tomorrow is going to be another busy day :X

A few things on my list
1) Guide 2.6.2 - simple fixes and gcc ebuild changes
2) Finish LiveCD 1.0.0
3) Finish Nicksched port to 2.6.16 project (very far along in this particular project, managed to get nicksched ported to 2.6.16, it is currently broken, but only 15 errors are coming from sched.c, and all *look* easy to fix - It is projected to be 70% more improved over plugsched, just as staircase and ingosched are much better than plugsched versions/)

You should comment out the patch for gcc bug #21581 from the overlay. It exposes other bugs in gcc (#26984, #26989 and #27000) that needs to be fixed first. It might be responsible for the KDE problems.

I am in the process of making a stage4 backup using https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-312817-highlight-stage4.html.

My question is, if I perform the Conrad install, do I simply just then unpack the stage4 tarball, wouldn't that overwrite the gcc libs etc etc? I really want the increased performance but am kinda scared to completely bork my system.

Worst case scenario I can see myself backing up my home directory to save my programs etc etc..

Also I saw the 'Lucky' automated install scripts, is there one for this version of Conrad?

I don't know enough about stage4 tarballs, but you SHOULD be able to use the stage4 in place of the stage3 and not have a problem

The lucky automated scripts, I dropped them a while ago, I loved them. I just haven't had enough time to keep them maintained.

If you are upgrading from 2.6.0 or 2.6.1, there is no need to rebuild anything, just extract the archives. (you may need to re-do the gcc-svn-update script)

[ebuild UD] sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.11-r3 [2.6.16]
[ebuild NS ] sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1_pre20060414 USE="fortran gtk multislot nls -bootstrap -build -doc -gcj -hardened -ip28 -mudflap -nocxx -nopie -objc -objc++ -objc-gc -vanilla"
[ebuild UD] sys-libs/glibc-2.4-r1 [2.4-r2]
[ebuild UD] media-libs/mesa-6.4.2-r2 [6.5-r1]
[ebuild UD] x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r3 [1.0.99.2]

[ebuild U ] media-video/mplayer-1.0.20060408 [1.0.20060302] USE="-unicode%"
[ebuild UD] net-p2p/gift-ares-0.2.2 [0.3.0]

add linux headers 2.6.16 and glibc 2.4-r2 back to your package.unmask and package.keywords.
package.keywords...
>=sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.16 -*
=sys-libs/glibc-2.4-r2 -*

package.unmask...
>=sys-libs/glibc-2.4-r2
>=sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.16
