Hello,

I think I know that I should enable my network card as a module in the kernel.

This is what I know:

LiveCD used "forcedeth" apparently and this worked just fine. But I have no idea how to activate this module. "modprobe forcedeth" replied with not finding "forcedeth".
In windows I think the card is called NVIDIA Network Adapter, or something similar (nForce network adapter or something).
The manual for my motherboard says this: Onboard LAN - Marvell PHY 88E1111 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet

I have a: MSI NVIDIA nForce 4 SLI Chipset Based K8N SLI board.

EDIT: It seems I added the "forcedeth" in the kernel (*) not as a module. What is the difference? How do I get it to work if it's not a module? Should I just make it a module?

Alright, seems I was a bit quick to post. I did search for a solution, without any luck, until I read a thread more thoroughly and found a link to a site with the solution. Anyway, for anyone else that find this thread when seaarching for the same problem, here's the solution:

net-misc/nforce-net is being removed from portage, in favour of the open-source "forcedeth" network driver included in the last few kernel releases.
If you own an nvidia nForce-based network adapter, just use forcedeth.

If you are using Linux 2.6:

Device Drivers --->
Networking support --->
Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) --->
[*] EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers
<M> Reverse Engineered nForce Ethernet support (EXPERIMENTAL)

Or, if you are using Linux 2.4:

Code maturity level options --->
[*] Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers

Network device support --->
Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) --->
[*] EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers
<M> nForce Ethernet support (EXPERIMENTAL)

Recompile your kernel, and copy over to the relevant boot location, and update bootloader config as usual.
Build forcedeth as a module in the normal way, and add it to your autoload list.
