why does Xgl install two header files into the "/" directory??? seems weird.

besides it seems it has created an "\" directory into the "/" directory, too...

Hi,

I don't think it's Xgl. I'm running trunk rev 142 and am running the same versions of mono and cairo that you are. Beagle and Tomboy are running constantly, I run Banshee every day and I have no problem starting F-Spot.

Perhaps you should start a new thread on this (and post a link here so I can follow it) under "Desktop Environments" and I'll try to help you. You can start it by including these error messages plus your "emerge --info".

Thank you for your reply. I've opened a new thread as suggested and here's the link Problems running mono based applications.
I hope you can help me get around that problem, I can't get my mono based applications to run and I'm missing them badly.

thanks and regards,

Has anyone tried the new Ati drivers? I believe they were released Apr 12th. I've been having that hard lock up issue since day one with my onboard PCIE ATI R300SE card and I read its something to do with the emulation of a hardware function in Mesa that has not been implemented in the Ati drivers, but is in the nvidia drivers. I don't have time to test the new drivers, Just curious if they help. If I find time before anyone posts ill report back with my results. Weird thing is at home I have an AGP X850GT ati card and XGL is running perfectly.

Are there any chances for fixing annoying bug with superkaramba themes always on top, in nearest future? :)

You can fix it by editing the karamba.cpp file as per this page

I found the solution, my Xgl line command had a false "-accel xgl" option I added
Quote:

/usr/bin/Xgl .. -accel xgl:pbuffer

and now all work fine

Woohoo, I can finally leave superkaramba running again!

skandal: elabdel just put the .. there to indicate it isn't the full command line.

I had a fully working xgl/compiz installation using coffeebuzz's overlay. The last time I updated was about 3 weeks ago. After doing an "svn up" and then doing "./install.sh up", it get this weird error now:

"compiz: couldn't open display :1"

and also gnome-panel (and everything else) says that it couldn't find display :1. The xserver starts up, switches to vt7 etc, but I just get the "X" cursor and nothing loads, except that gray screen.

Any help?

EDIT: Just a quick note to say that my normal X installation works fine (gnome or xfce4 etc.)

i had the same problem i had to add a sleep 15 command in startxgl script from coffeebuzz' overlay (in the line just after a command starting Xgl - you have two of them in this file one for ati and one for nvidia). apparently xgl needs some more time to set itself up and if you start compiz too early it cannot connect to xgl.

Just a note on something that needs to be fixed. The focus is a little messed up. For example, if I switch to a different virtual screen and then back again my last used window on that screen is NOT in focus any more. Actually nothing is in focus most of the time so I have to use the mouse and click to re-focus it or ALT-TAB. It's kind of annoying when I don't want to use my mouse.

Also, when I save settings in gnome so that the windows that are currently open will open again next time I start my computer they do not open on the correct screen, they all open on the first one.

hope this is an easy one.

startxgl 0 gnome ati

and getting error

(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

fatal server error:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer)) on X server ":93:0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

running gentoo of course. kernel is 2.6.15-r1. xgl 04014. mesa 0415. compiz-vanilla 0416. xorg-server 1.0.99.901. and xorg-x11 is 7.0-r1.
VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev fglrx vesa"
ati-drivers 8.23.7 with a radeon mobility 9600

emerge -pv mesa lists USE="motif -3dnow -debug -mmx -sse" VIDEO_CARDS="-ati -i810 -mga -none -s3virge -savage -sis -tdfx -trident -via"
and that seems kinda odd to me that theres no vid card there. but not sure what it should be or if its wrong, as i don't think i changed my VIDEO_CARDS since last time i built everything a couple weeks ago. i get this same error even when i run startx now.

happy to provide any other info.

I had the same problem, try downgrading to xorg-server-1.0.2-r3, also now that the packages from xorg 7.0 is not hardmasked anymore remove them from package.unmask. or you'll just emerge wrong packages, like this one.

I have an issue with every once in a while gdm switches me to vt7 and asks to start another server. It seems to keep trying to open a server and fails because their already is a server running. Any suggestions?

I also have an issue with the keys being messed up. The ? key is actually _.

And.... The panels have window decorations. I am using compiz-quinstorm.

Help?

Progress report on this build. Using mesa and Xgl ebuilds dated 20060418, I can still run this bad boy with all the various effects on. However, I completely forgot to pull and build the latest compiz version available. Amazingly I am still running on 20060322-r2 right now. However, the most pleasing thing right now is being able to watch Initial D at 100% zoom w/o any noticeable framerate hit (video resolution is at 640x360). Before the video framerate wouldn't be good enough to properly view the animation at full speed. Now I can and it's wonderful. I do not know how this'll affect 640x480 video but I'll test this at a later time. For now I am happy that the continuing updates on the Intel drivers that the performance of it continues to improve on it.

For those wondering and wishing to try it out... here are the juicy details:

Intel 855GM
512MB RAM -- 32MB reserved for video
Pentium-M 1.7GHz
gentoo-sources-2.6.15-gentoo-r1
mesa 6.5.1 p20060418
Xgl p20060418
compiz 0.0.7 p20060322-r2
Xorg 7.0 w/ xorg-server 1.0.99.901-r1 and xf86-video-i810 1.6.0
x11-drm-20051223

This ought to be enough info... although I question if x11-drm can be skipped in order to determine if the stable release is enough to get everything going. I didn't try glxgears or anything else. I focus on usability as well as media playback since this laptop cannot do much. But amazingly this thing will kick Windows Vista any day of the week with its ability to do fancy effects on this kind of hardware. :)
