|
|
Here is my situation:
I use amarok to listen to mp3's, and in amarok, there is an option to use last.fm, which is in short, a way to keep track of played mp3's. However, amarok submits these mp3s with the UTC time stamp. The UTC time on my computer is 5 hours ahead of my local time. I need to change it so that my UTC time syncs up with my local time. People have suggested "emerg[ing] ntp" for help, but I cannot figure out how to use it. Can somebody please help me here? How do I change the UTC?
some helpfull stuff:
Code: |
tux swooshonln # date
Sat Apr 8 22:54:28 EDT 2006
tux swooshonln # hwclock
Sat Apr 8 22:54:35 2006 -0.728519 seconds
|
UTC time shows: (via clock on gnome)
Code: |
Sun Apr 9 2:44:28 2006
|
I do have ntp set up, and my /etc/ntp.conf file is configure like this: (have no idea if it works or not)
Code: |
restrict 127.0.0.1 nomodify
# Allow ntp to automatically correct predictable clock drift
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift
# logfile defaults to var/log/messages
logfile /var/log/ntp.log
server 0.north-america.pool.ntp.org
server 1.north-america.pool.ntp.org
server 2.north-america.pool.ntp.org

For the situation you described, NTP isn't going to help you. NTP (Network Time Protocol) is a way to keep the time on your PC correctly sync'd.
UTC, also known as Coordinated Universal Time, is a seperate time zone used to ensure that computers across the world share a common time. When you have to deal with different time zones, and daylight saving time, it can be complicated to know exactly when an event happened on two seperate computers in different countries.
So basically you can't change UTC, you can change your computer to use UTC, but thats not what you want to do most likely |

If you set your computer clock to use UTC and be set to the correct UTC time, set your timezone correctly then they should sync properly. The system should translate any UTC timestamps into the correct time for your locale. The timezone setting as mentioned in the gentoo install guide is important. It tells your system how many hours to add or subtract from UTC time to display correctly in your time. Of course if a program does not follow the correct rules, then it may not match. _________________ Brian
