The only DVD ripper that I have found to work properly consistantly is plain old mencoder on the CLI. All other DVD ripping solutions I have tried either crash, have very poor A/V sync or ar incapable of calculating bitrates for final filesize. For me, when I tried Thoggen a few months ago, if it didn't crash the audio was always offset by almost as much as a second to the video.

you need to type

(Assuming you have dbus and hald installed)
#rc-update show

Now look for dbus and hald....if you have them type if not emerge them. And then type this

#rc-update add dbus default
#rc-update add hald default

reboot and then try running thoggen again.

turning hal and dbus on fixes thoggen. It seems to make other things behave oddly. I think that's related to using 2.6.16 that has lots of "gotchas". I'll switch to good old 2.6.15 and see what (if anything) that does.

Well I'll need to test further. It looks like their's something about hal and the 2.6.16 kernel that's not behaving.[/post]
