I'm looking at setting up a server for some service (mostly for learning etc). Just looking for some recommendations on some popular servers. I'm looking at the following services and have filled on the ones I know I'll likely use:
WWW Server - Apache
FTP - vsFTPD
Mail Server - qmail
Windows File Share - Samba
DHCP - dhcp
DNS - ???
Firewall - ???
VPN Server - ???
Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

For dns try dnsmasq and for firewall iptables. For vpn that depends on if you need windows boxes to be able to connect. I've never set up that before so don't have a recommendation.

Hi.
I would recommend postfix for mail and bind for DNS. If you want a complete e-mail solution, you might want to consider cyrus and horde/imp. _________________ Jorge.

I've been using openvpn to secure my wireless connection at home for a few weeks and it seems to work well and is easy enough to set up. It apparently runs on windows but I haven't tried it there. |

Thanks for the input. I did some looking at the items you guys recommended and I think I'll go with iptables with firestarter for the firewall.
I had been looking at MyDNS but maybe I'll checkout bind.
I went to the postfix website and they had a link to Zimbra which is a postfix addon. Gentoo doesn't have an ebuild for it but the source can be downloaded at http://www.zimbra.com . It is a really nice looking Groupware suite. I think I might check it out.
I noticed OpenVPN too and I think I'll try it out. I found from their website that there are Windows and Linux GUI's but I haven't been able to find ebuilds for them (except for some KDE ones). Does anyone know if there is an ebuild for a GNOME or GTK+ GUI?
Thanks,
Don |
