Also worth mentioning, is if you want a beyonds, there is a kconfig option to enable the server configuration.

James

Got beyonds up and running on my server last night, and it's working great!

Also... incase it helps anyone, here's the script I'm using on all of my (now) beyond systems... just do "./get_beyond.sh 2". "2" being the patchset revision. To change the kernel version, you'll need to edit the file.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# get_beyond.sh

VER=2.6.16
ORIG=http://beyond-sources.generation.no/gentoo/${VER}-beyond${1}
DEST=/usr/local/portage/sys-kernel/beyond-sources
USER="--user-agent=asshat"

# Clean out old stuff so the manifest doesn't get mad
if [[ -d ${DEST} ]] ; then
        /bin/rm -r ${DEST}
fi

mkdir -p ${DEST}

wget ${ORIG}/Manifest -P ${DEST} ${USER}
wget ${ORIG}/beyond-sources-${VER}-r${1}.ebuild -P ${DEST} ${USER}
wget ${ORIG}/digest-beyond-sources-${VER}-r${1} -P ${DEST}/files ${USER}

All's well here!
Code:
Linux drizzt 2.6.16-beyond2 #1 Wed Apr 12 11:24:46 PDT 2006 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ GNU/Linux
Happily, it seems faster than 2.6.15-nitro3.

System info (for reference):
x86_64
nxsty's glibc overlay
xorg7
reiser4
madwifi-driver-0.1485.20060325
nvidia-kernel-1.0.8756
Full ~amd64

I can not get audio to work with this kernel. Everything else is working well. I am using the Intel HD ALSA driver which was working for me when using the 2.6.16-ck2 kernel. One thing I have noticed between the 2 kernels is beyond-sources uses the 1.0.11rc4 ALSA driver and ck2 was using 1.0.11rc2. Does anyone have the Intel HD driver built-in to this kernel with sound working?

I have used HDA-INTEL from both 1.0.11rc4 and rc5 with this kernel but I use ALSA drivers from portage. It shouldn't make any difference but may be you should try the separate drivers instead of the in-kernel version.

I just tried the alsa-driver package. The drivers loaded, but I still get no sound.

It might be that some ctl ids have changed once again, could you chack if your sound is not simply starting up muted?

I did run alsamixer and sound was not muted, but Master was not an option. After doing a little more research I saw there are a couple bugfixes in the 2.6.17-rc1 kernel for my sound card.

Just an observation... my previously posted problems occur with AHCI enabled. I tried disabling AHCI, and this results in a quick kernel panic (root partition cannot be found). Problem with sil3114 + AHCI?

Which soundcard are you using btw? I have never had Master as an option with "ICH6 rev (03) HDA controller" but still things work fine. When I need to mute, I mute using "Front".

Tiger, just tested a new kernel... mm-sources 2.6.17-rc1-mm2

sil3114 is working fine. Hoping you can get nitro, I mean beyond working for sil cards soon :)

Really want to try adaptive read ahead (working well for others?)

This seems particular to beyond-sources, because I can compile shfs against gentoo-sources 2.14 with reiser4 and suspend2 patches applied.

I might try this kernel. A few things, though...

1) In all >2.6.15 kernels, the reiser4 driver gives "Out of memory" errors in dmesg and my system slowly crashes, starting with something like kded or konqueror not working. Usually, this prevents me from writing to my reiser4 partition at all. That is, if I reboot, I will have lost anything I recently tried to write. I've tested this with more than a couple nitro and no releases since 2.6.15 and none have yet to fix this... 2.6.15-nitro3 works fine.

Check https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3142226-highlight-.html#3142226 to see what I mean.

2) What are the best options if I'm using reiser4? By options, I mean iosched and preempt options, or anything else that really matters.

Thanks.

The fix for this is in beyond-dev since -git3, and because i submitted it into stable, it is also in this release, so if i were you i'd simply
try and convince myself. Also, feedback on if your problem persists in this release or not would be very appreciated.

thanks,

hmm, everything seems fine, but when I loginto kde, just as it's about loading everthing.. splash screen goes away, it suddenly exits and hard-locks... only rebooting helps. happens every time! :/

using ati-drivers if that is a known problem :/

Actually no...

From what i know other people have no problems either with ati or nvidia with both kde and gnome.

I'm liking this kernel so far. Haven't had my problem come and take revenge yet. However, there are a couple things.

1) Splashutils takes EXTREMELY long to start up. It stays on Initializing kernel... and slowly, slowly fades in.

Code:
title Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1600x1200-32@85 splash=silent,fadein,theme:livecd-2006.0 console=tty1
initrd (hd0,0)/fbsplash-livecd-2006.0-1600x1200

It worked fine on older kernels... Maybe something to do with my config, or I didn't merge in all the proper apps after upgrading my kernel? I did emerge --oneshot nvidia-kernel klibc splashutils, and I don't think there's anything else that immediately effects splashutils, so I'm stumped on this one.

2) I can't get 1920x1440@85 in this release, but I could in 2.6.15-nitro3. The highest I can go up to is 1600x1200@85 or 1920x1440@75. This was in X, while I would only be able to get 1600x1200@85 in X in that nitro release I mentioned. Not that big of a deal, I like having the same res in both console and X, but it's kind of annoying.

While these are kind of annoying, I have to admit that my system is snappier now than it was before. Thanks for the great release!

Dont even know what the hell ~arch is ;)

Dont forget, it's not just gentoo users that use beyond. Heck, stable beyond isnt even made on gentoo *shock*. I'm an Arch user.

ahhh ok :p
Well, basically its the latest version of VMWare with a any-any patch that has been on their forums for a while (I think its the patch that makes the difference.. it seems that without it (normal stable branch of Gentoo (non ~arch) doesn't include this patch) that it is then you get the error (due to the mem split thingy in the kernel))

Not all distros have that version, so I think it'll have to remain.

and BTW... congrats to getting on digg's front page ;-)

And to the last person above who had a problem with shfs, it needs this patch for 2.6.16
http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~qiq/src/shfs/shfs-0.35/d_entry-2.6.16.diff

Or if you want to patch it straight onto your kernel tree, grab the shfs patch from the broken out in the last ArchCK release.
