|

Hi all,
I've playing around with Linux for around 6 months and having tried SUSE 10.0, Ubuntu, I am a little disappointed. Not with Linux, but by being frustrated at not learning enough about the OS. So, deep breath and I've decided to install Gentoo. So far, even though I've failed my first install I've learnt more in 4 hours than six months!! So far so good!!
A couple of questions. I tried to "swapon /dev/hda2" having created /dev/hda2 as a type 82 partion (by the manual). Inititalised the swap using mkswap /dev/hda2, but when I then try to activate the swap I get and Invalid Arguement error. Having read the FAQ and forum I know I need to look at FSTAB to check the config there. However, is there a way other than FDISK to see if /dev/hda2 is created as a swap?
Also, When running "USE="-doc symlink" emerge gentoo-sources" the OS can't find the command USE. I had got to Section 7b of the manual. Is there a PATH statement I can add to run this?
Many thanks in advance

my guess is something about your baselayout is incorrect... how did you install your system, from a stage3? _________________ "WARNING: you may LOL"
This is my font size, color, and signature. It will change to whatever I pick. How cool is that?

Yes, it is a stage 3.
I follow the manual step by step for a Gentoo 2006.0 Minimal CD/InstallCD. I created 4 partitions /dev/hda1 (32M) for boot, /devhda2 (2048M) for swap (type 82), /dev/hda3 (20G) for Gentoo and /dev/hda4 (the remainder of a 200G disk) for home. Pretty much as per the manual, but with the additional home partition.
I will persist and get it right!!!! |

2048 MB for swap? WOW, hehe
Code: |
USE="-doc symlink" emerge gentoo-sources
|
returns what exactally? USE isnt really a command, its kinda like a variable _________________ "WARNING: you may LOL"

Coming from a M$ world (which needs all the help an OS can get to run properly...) I'm sort of use to massive pagefiles. If Gentoo handles memory better (er, any OS probably handles memory better!!!). Maybe I'll scale down would 512M be sufficient?
Code: |
USE="-doc symlink" emerge gentoo-sources

Bing, a light goes on! Best get back to RTFM!!
Many thanks for the advice

Recreated the swap with a more normal 512M and lo and behold swapon worked ok.
That'll teach me to adopt M$ philosophy when installing Linux!!
Many thanks |
