Finally got past the ethernet issue only to run into a problem with my 3ware card. From the Gentoo LiveCD I booted thusly:

(Before I get started: This is a dual boot scenario with WinXP Pro)
gentoo doataraid nodhcp

the card did not get recognized so I:

modprobe 3w*

which gave me:

3w-xxxx: scsi1: <3ware card detected> (not sure of exact message, it has long since scrolled by)
3w-xxxx: scsi1: Unit #0 command(dd6d4a00) timed out, resetting card
3w-xxxx: scsi1: Unit #1 command (dd6d4a00) timed out, resetting card
3w-xxxx: scsi1: Unit #1 command (dd...) timed out, resetting card
reset succeeded
3w-xxxx: scsi1: Unit #0 etc., etc, ....

This pattern keeps repeating while incrementing Unit number. Goes up to 15 then dumps out to command line.

lsmod shows:
3w-xxxx <size> 0 (unused)
ataraid <size> 0
...

cat /proc/devices shows:
...
block devices:
ramdisk
fd
ide0
sd
ide1
sd
sd
ataraid
cloop

I read a post which indicates I need to do:
modprobe sr_mod
modprobe sd_mod

but neither of these modules is found.
