|
|
Hi All,
I am running a Dell Inspiron 1100 with gentoo kernel 2.6.14-r9. For the past sometime I have been having strange problem with my CDRW/DVD combo. I can successfully read every single kind of cd media - cd-r, cdrw, multisession cdrw.
but when it comes to dvds, sometime (actually quite offen) i am unable to mount the dvds. i have problems mounting dvd movies, dvd+r, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw media regardless of whether they are multisession or no. however, if i reboot gentoo with the dvd still in the drive, then after reboot i can sometimes read the drive. on unsuccessful mount attempts, i get the error message:
Code: |
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
|
the above message is generated even if i try to specify filesystems such as udf, iso9660.
i also have a winxp dual boot and i can read all my cd as well as dvd media without any problems.
could someone pls point what could be the problem. _________________ Parminder

Can you post the relevant output from dmesg after you get one of these errors? |

i have the same problem, i wonder if it's grub in that it all started when i changed my bootloader, anyway, i guess i'll have to fire up my live cd and see if it works there.
oh and yeah i don't want to reinstall the entire os over again (i've already done it 4 times during this week ) |

hi all,
i am sorry that i have not posted back here once the problem was resolved. the following were the cause of my problem:
- i had compiled scsi-cdrw support into my kernel.
- in the grub boot loader i was passing ide-scsi=hdb (pointing to my cdrw) on boot.
These 2 above were causing problems with my drives. i have removed ide-scsi or similar paramteres from my boot. you do not need any scsi support anymore to burn cds, just use -dev atapi:0:0:0 or similar. i left the filesystem as auto in /etc/fstab for cdrw drives and it works like a charm
hope this help.
thanx,
