I didn't set up hardware scceleration at first, so I'm doing it now following the wiki guide here : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml , as well as piecemeal postings from around the interwebs. Problem is the xorg.conf file. Now, I've been running kde 3.4 since I went through my initial setup and I've installed xorg-x11 as a part of the attempt to get direct rendering to work. Xorg is version 6.8.2-r6. When attempting to add the necessary bits to the xorg.conf file about dri and glx, etc, I found that I have no xorg.conf in /etc/X11 . I do have a xorg.conf.example file, however.

I've already tried putting the necessary lines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf , but upon reboot my system complains about missing necessary portions of the xorg.conf file when I try to startx. There is no problem when I remove or rename the xorg.conf file, leading me to believe kde is using a different file.

when I slocate "xorg.conf" nothing else pertinent comes up, just the example and some burried deep under /usr/portage/ .........

Is there another file I should be modifying instead or copy into /etc/X11/ and modify from there?

Any help is appreciated. Obligatory lspci to follow.

I've been trying to follow the X guide you posted, but It keeps getting stuck on the mouse portion when automatically recognizing hardware or trying to startx. It's just a standard PS/2 touchpad on my laptop. Any ideas.

Well everything is working now. It seems that gentoo refers to /dev/mouse as mouse0 now, which threw the automatic config for a loop.
