At the end of the download of the first of the 3 X86 files (stages) I get this message

Code:
Out of Memory: Killed process 2872 (links)
Killed

Is this a problem? or does that just mean links turns off at the end of the download? If it is a problem, how do I fix it?

Add some swap space - that's from oom_kill

It sounds to me like you are downloading the stage tarball to your RAM instead of to /mnt/gentoo. Try it again but make sure that you save it to your harddisk and not the livecd's environment.

make sure you have mounted your swap in the first place ;-)

Code:

swapon /dev/hda2

or whatever your swap partition is.

Good point - pays to remember the environment involved.
