i'm looking for a nice GUI irc client
i myself am quite happy with BitchX, but i work at a linux-based (and so much more!) cybercaffee, and it's a realy pain in the ass to teach every single win-user how and why to use BitchX (or even Xchat) ...i can't bare it anymore!!! _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

Can't you compile BitchX with an xwindows interface? I believe it adds tabs for each channel and a simple menu driven interface. I am not quite sure how to do it though In fact, I remember it being relatively unstable, but that was several years ago. |

kvirc (http://www.kvirc.net/) or mirc (win) under wine _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |

hmmm ...it's free?
...the problem is that i don't have the nerve to explain BitchX to everyone, and i never really tried xchat (i had some attempts that failed miserably!)
done that already ...just tried if it works ...but you'll understand why i'm not going to install wine and mirc on everyone of over 10 PCs (5 of whitch are only X clients, running from the main server!) ...i don't have the nerve and also out of belief :]
kvirc looks kinda cool (transparent and stuff) i think i'll try it _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

Also try konversation.. it's meant to be user-friendly.
Another good client is lostirc... it's also quite user-friendly.
Finally, there is always ksirc which is included with KDE.
I personally like and use xchat2 though |

I've been strugling to find a decent client for QT myself. Kvirc is *very* powerful, but it just kill my eyes. All that "eyecandy" is useless, most of it can't be changed (like the windows colors/button, and the little icons it places on each line) and all in all reminds me of one of those crappy scripts for mIRC. A damn pitty, as i said it's otherwise excellent.
So, i went on looking for clients... with little or no luck. The closest call was X-Chat2, which is ok and looks pretty configurable. But's GTK and it lacks some features i'd like (aliases, nick notify list, etc etc etc). Is a text client all that's left? |
