there is probably a real simple reason for this, but, all of my windows are in black in white now that I have enabled the trailfocus plugin. My desktop is in colour, it is just the windows that are black and white.
What setting do I need to change to get colour back?
Thanks

Just so I understand, you say *all* windows are greyscale. Even if you click on the titlebar of a window it doesn't become normal-looking?
In any case, open gconf-editor to /apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options. The saturation_level settings are the ones you want -- maximum should be 100, minimum is whatever looks good to you. Same for opacity and brightness.
Of course, setting maximum_window_saturation_level down to some low number would give your system a slightly retro, Mac classic-ish look... |

Your understanding is correct.
No matter what number I give to the variables you mention, I live in a greyscale environment.
do I need to restart Xgl for changes to take affect.
How can I restart Xgl without rebooting my whole computer.
I run Xgl from the command line and for some reason I can't ctrl alt f1 to a terminal anymore. I am spoiled by gdm.
thanks

I find that the plugins settings are immediately applied. That requires gconfd to be running in the background. gconfd is started by gnome-session, which is started when you log into Gnome via gdm.
If I understood you correctly, you're running Xgl from a command line rather than with gdm. Perhaps gconfd is not running? You could:to see.
Otherwise, you would have to restart compiz, not Xgl. If you're using the compizrc script from the HOWTO, just run it from a terminal to restart compiz. |

No problem. The HOWTO shows several ways of starting Xgl/compiz. compizrc is a start script for people starting Xgl with Gnome/gdm, so if you set up your system following those instructions, somewhere in your path is a script called compizrc. So you would just type "compizrc" in a terminal to restart it.
If you didn't use that method, you still have a script somewhere that includes something like the following: Code: | DISPLAY=:1 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ compiz --replace gconf &
DISPLAY=:1 gnome-window-decorator &
DISPLAY=:1 setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us -variant basic |
Those lines, or some slight variation depending on your keyboard model, are what you need to restart compiz.

Then I don't know why the settings are not automatically applied. Perhaps this is just a less stable build of compiz-quinnstorm that's causing the problem for you. Which version are you running? |

I am currently running 0.0.9.3 version.
I would love to use gdm, but I am not technical enough to make it work with gnome 2.12. I here is works with gnome 2.14, and I am not sure if I should install the new gnome. If it was stable enough, then I would. <grin>

I have got gdm working thanks to Star.Dancer, but I can't use trailfocus.
I love the idea of it, but all my window decorations are greyscale and not matter what I do in the options section, it remains greyscale.
I would love to have this plugin working.

I had similar problems when i switched on trialfocus after using transset beautifully.
After playing with it for a while i got my settings to do the same as transset.
Here is my settings. Be aware that as you change them, the windows will be hard to see sometimes
till you finish.
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/maximum_trail_count = 2
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/maximum_window_brightness_level = 100
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/maximum_window_opacity_level = 90
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/maximum_window_saturation_level = 100
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/minimum_window_brightness_level = 95
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/minimum_window_opacity_level = 50
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/minimum_window_saturation_level = 100
With these settings i was able to have awesome transparency but windows still retain the color in them.
You can see my windows transparency in my screenshot. Link is in my signature
EDIT: Don't forget to exclude your desktop applets or they won't look right if they already have transparency.
/apps/compiz/plugins/trailfocus/screen0/options/exclude [Gdesklets-daemon,Superkaramba]
You can use this command to find out the proper name for your excludes.
