|

hi
Gentoo Forum is really big now and alot of people get helped, at the same time, alot of people are putting effort into helping others.
I'm wondering why don't we put up some ads (somethings related to our interests) on the website so we can generate some revenues.
Pay the devs.
Throw them some parties.
Pay someone to do priority task that no one has time to do.
Upgrade system.
Whatever. etc etc.
I mean come on, we got a good way to make money to keep Gentoo alive, and make it better. Why not take it to the fullest?
I know some users will probably hate me for thinking this up. But think about this, the devs are working hard to give you the free goodies, do you really mind giving something back? especially something as easy as looking (you don't have to) at ads.

There is more to Gentoo than the forums. Advertising, as well as a Donate button, already appears on several important pages at www.gentoo.org. I do not hate you, but I do think this is not a good idea. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.

I say let them have it. Those of you who absolutely hate adds have the available option to use an ad blocker. This gives some advertising to two groups. Those who want to support the devs and 2 people on a different machine than their own (without the blocker) looking up documentation. If they earn $20 each then fine let them buy a beer.

If devs were paid, wouldn't that violate Gentoo's status as a non-for-profit organization? _________________ undvd - ripping dvds should be as simple as unzip |

I`m in the middle,I really dislike ads, contributing to the devs is a fine idea! If the devs don`t put them there is it really a violation? |

No, incorrect. In the USA at least, non-profits can and usually do have paid staff. The corporation just can't show a profit. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.

Well I don't mind a donation thing, but I can't stand ads. The forums are a blessed sanctuary from all the bandwidth-hungry ads out there. |

I would rather not have ads on the forums. As for money, the foundation has quite a bit, but most of the time it isn't needed (most of our hardware needs are taken care of by the great folks at http://osuosl.org/) _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

Exactly. NPOs have paid staff, and any potential profits they have tend to go back into expanding the NPO... or into someone's paycheck. Can't have the organization making money, afterall.
As to the ads, I use an ad blocker anyways. Only problem I'd have with it is if messed up the layout of the forum (which I've seen on a few others) making the side ugly and not as usability friendly. And ads are kind of a turn-off for new users too. |

Please, no ads:
1. They would not make any significant amount of profit.
2. Many users would block them.
3. Ads suck big time.
Donations and Gentoo merchandise is most likely all this project needs. |

...and I'd assume that a lot of gentoo users use ad-block. The person who hosts gentoo-portage.com found out that donations work much better than ads (see the "News") _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |
