xmame + sdl question

MAME games are the only games I play these days. I wanted to install it on gentoo with grustibus as a front end. Emerge --pretend grustibus showed Mame needs a part of kde.
Because I prefer gnome I tried USE="-kde" --> same result.
It appears SDL needs the kde lib. It's really a shame gnome users have to compile this huge lib to use mame with SDL. I guess gentoo is a bit KDE oriented or am I wrong?

You could try USE="-kde -arts"
