I had my symlinks working just fine a little while ago. Then I removed /backup, one of my custom folders, which several of my symlinks pointed to, and now Apache doesn't recognize my symlinks pointing outside of /var/www/[sitename]/. It isn't that httpd.conf changed; it still says Options FollowSymLinks where it is supposed to. And it isn't bad symlinks; the symlinks work in Konqueror. What can I do to fix apache? (I'm running 2.0.55_r1)

Thats a little odd. Have you tried the simple thing of doing an
Code:
/etc/init.d/apache2 restart
?

Do you still have a number of dead symlinks pointed to the removed folder and files? Maybe you should purge those too. Again - I cant see how that would affect anything but the symlinks to that folder itself, but it might be worth a try.

OK, I've tried making a new folder/site and trying it. httpd.conf is the default. vhosts.conf or whatever it's called is fine too; I set it up with ServerName billydorminy.homelinux.com ServerAlias billydorminy.homelinux.com *.billydorminy.homelinux.com and the defaults. Then I go
Code:
ln -s /home/billy/sciencefair /var/www/billydorminy/htdocs/sciencefair/sciencefair
. Then Konq shows a folder link, owner billy:users, and when I click it, it shows the proper contents of /home/billy/sciencefair. But when I go to billydorminy.homelinux.com/sciencefair/sciencefair, I get "Don't have permission to access sciencefair/sciencefair on this server".... Yes, I have restarted both Apache and my computer a few times, and I've even re-emerged apache.

And symlinks in /var/www/billydorminy/htdocs/words/gecko pointing to /var/www/billydorminy/htdocs/words/ work just fine, although they are file links not folder links.

proftpd, with that dir shared, works, so I can get to ftp://billy@billydorminy.homelinux.com/sciencefair/sciencefair . just fine...
