Hi, I'm using the Gentoo installer (GUI) (I'm writing from the livecd), and after 5 attempts the installer decided to format the disk and install Gentoo.

Everything seemed to go smoothly when it kind of stopped during the "Adding additiona packages" fase.
It says "emerging app-office/openoffice-bin-2.0.1 (238/262)"

this is the content of the log of the installer (I the one under the "Log" tab of the installer)

Would it be safe if I closed the installer now?

If I did it, should I reinstall Gentoo from scratch?

Thanks in advance for the answer.

i wouldnt install from scratch, i would go to the commandline and type "emerge sync" and then "emerge -uDv system" and see what happens.

if it really was at installing openoffice, the complete mainsystem is already installed. so is X etc..
are you able to boot from the harddisk already? try it

btw.. there is enough space left on the drive?

That was al the log file. It's all the content of /var/log/installer.log

this is the end of the "Output tab" (it's too long to post it all)

Code:

>>> /usr/share/ntp/stats/summary.sh
>>> /usr/share/ntp/stats/tdata.S

My harddisk is partitioned in the following way

hdb1 /boot 39Mb
hdb3 / 9.6 GB
hdb5 swap 4.x GB
hdb6 /home 100GB

There is no space left.

I can try to reboot from the livecd and follow your suggestions.

there is no space left on hdb3? in this case, delete the contents of /usr/portage/distfiles, also check /var/tmp/portage.

though.. ~10GB should be enough, IMHO. hmm.. you did install openoffice-bin (binary), and NOT the source? openoffice from source needs a lot space!!

well
Code:

It says "emerging app-office/openoffice-bin-2.0.1 (238/262)"

you ahve installed almost everything already (238/262 packages). so the system should boot, if the GUI installer behaves correctly. cleanout ditsfiles and /tmp/portages, and see how much space you have left on hdb3 (df- h)

I think I misunderstood you question. The free space on / is 6.1GB.

I did "emerge sync"
Then I didn't use the other command you had suggested me.
I set up the xorg.conf and the connection.
did "gdm start" and I've entered GNOME.

I'm emerging "openoffice-bin" now.

Is there anything else I have to do?
Shall I do an "emerge -uDv system"?

Thanks

well, so you are fine! congrats.

well, emerge and configure applications you like. you are done.

well, you should run "glsa-check -t all" on a dayly basis, to see if there are security risks with one or the other package. 1st emerge --sync, then glsa-check. if everything is fine, usually no need to update anything.

however, to be "UpToDate" i would recommend "emerge -upDv world" regulary. it shows the packages it would update (it doesn install anything, the "p" is for --pretend).
well, its all up to you know. good luck, glad it worked out.

everything beyond this would be a little offtopic in this thread. some of the devs would have to answer, why the GUI installer stopped, and didnt write the logs to its end. this is beyond my knowledge, i never used the GUI installer.
