hello i have just upgraded my computers hardware. i want to use the same hard drive (of course) i created a new kernel entry for the new hardware in grub (as it should be done) i chose the exact hardware and some optinonal things as well. to the point -> my sound and network do not work. i can understand the sound, linux has never had great multimedia support, but the network i turn your attention to:
the onboard network controller is a realtek, which i selected both for compatibility reasons, anyways it would just hang on dhcp and get no ip address. static works... kinda, i can get an ip, and can ping it, but i cant ping anything else, even other computers on the network. i added a 3com network card, and it still didnt work. ( i spent all afternoon in the kernel)
my sound is reasonably simular: alsa would not load anything in the kmix output, but the second i use oss, it has an output, but the problem with that is no sounds come out anyways. i try a song in xmms and xmms freezez and i have to kill it. any ideas i can try would be helpful (mayby a little less network consuming since i only have dialup and i dont have the network working on this comp)
on another note: i took the hard drive back into the original computer and loaded the kernel for that one and it works like a charm... |

I would try doing an lspci -vv to find out what exactly is on the new comp. Most likely, the new comp has slightly different hardware that's gonna need different modules loaded into the kernel, especially w/ the sound. W/ the networking, take the model number lspci gives you and search the forums/web for "realtek model # linux". You'll find out what module you need loaded. Most likely it's still an 8139, but again, could be just enough off to be a pain
edit: I just re-read what you were saying w/ the network, if you can only ping yourself after config'ing statically, you actually can't get to the network. Your card is basically saying "this is who I am" but the rest of the network doesn't care. The module problem is probably what's getting you there as well. _________________ The Master of All Things That Don't Matter |

actually i have the modules specifyed. it is the realteck, and teh sound is the viz 8000x series. i made the kernel for the new system before i swithed it over and after i spent all afternoon trying differant stuff with the kernel trying to get it to work. so the problem does not lie with the kernel modules.
[edit] i have fixed this problem[/edit] |
