After converting from debian to gentoo a few weeks ago my Archive 4586NP tape drive is no longer detected at boot despite the fact that I'm using the same kernel sources and the same .config file (at least the .config was the same before I tried everything I could thing of to get it working.
Booting from a Knoppx liveCD (v3.6) with a 2.6 kernel also detects the drive
The box is an IBM Netfinity 5500
dual PIII 500MHz CPU
1GB RAM (4 x 256MB PC100 ECC SDRAM)
IBM PCI ServeRAID 7.12.02 Build 761 <ServeRAID II> (integrated)
With these Physical SCSI devices
scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 HP 9.1GB
scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0 Compaq 18.2GB
scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 Compaq 18.2GB
scsi0, channel 0, id 3, lun 0 Compaq 18.2GB
scsi0, channel 0, id 4, lun 0 Compaq 18.2GB
scsi0, channel 1, id 4, lun 0 Archive 4586NP 4 tape changer (DDS2)
This is the scsi portion of .config:

The only obvious thing I see is that you have two devices with SCSI id 4. Even though they are on separate channels, I don't think that is kosher. Try setting it to an unused id and see if that helps. _________________ Ask Questions the Smart Way - by ESR |

the drive was working correctly with this configuration in debian and knoppix so I doubt that could be the issue. I have actaully written and read from the drive in knoppix in the middle of testing without problem so I believe it must be a gentoo specific problem.
Sadly I have no manual for the drive so I can't tell which switches/jumpers set the scsi id. I have spent many hours googling to various dead ends for the manual. |

I changed the drive at scsi0, channel 0, id 4, lun 0 to scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun 0 and it made no difference, the boot process only under gentoo) still doesn't look at the 2nd channel
