|
|
Hi all
I am running vsftpd and am having some problems. At the moment my adsl ip changes every six hours and i have a DUC ip updater from no-ip which keeps the dns currnet. as a result though i have to set the timeout in vsftpd.conf quite high, but this is not a problem. anyway the point is is that the vsftpd timeouts are high.
however when an ip changes the clients timeout - the clients being windows xp - and i think this is because windows xp has set itself to give up on a connection if its quiet for around 5 secs. is there any way to change this?
thanks in advance! |

of course the clients timeout.
How shall they keep up a connection to a server which changes it's ip address in the middle of a session? There *must* be a timeout. _________________ Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself |

yes exactly. but the problem is that the CLIENTS give up too soon. and can this be changed?! i did an experiment by transferring a file over. and unplugged the network cable. all was fine when i plugged it back in (i took it out for about 2 secs) but then it fails if its done for 5 secs. obvioulsy this is not the server - since timeout is set much higher. so, how can i tell windows not to give up so soon?!
thanks. and sorry if i am not being clear, being dumb etc! |

oh sorry. presumably they maintain a connection with the server when its ip changes because if it fails, does the client not attempt to reconnect to the address , which will be updated when the DUC kicks in? as you can probably tell i am not entirely clued up on the matter. but hopefully i am making some sort of sense |

If at all the ftp client tries to reconnect to the former ip address, thats why this attempt then fails when this ip is gone. Normally the ftp client does not do annother dns lookup during an existing connection (why should he). _________________ Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself |

oh right. so in fact the whole dns updater thing is a waste of time as far as the transfers go. bummer. is there any possible work around? static ip's cost so much! |
