I get </bin/bash: /usr/lib/portage/bin/ebuild.sh: permission denied> when emerging portage
during the initial build. I have searched this fourm and google but have not found a solution
yet.
system: supermicro m/b w/2 3.8GHz Xenon procs and 8G of memory.
I'm not sure how to get dmesg, emerge --info, lspci, or any other information pasted
to this messege. Help doing that would also be a big help.
Thanks

Hi.

How are you installing Gentoo? Are you using the GLI, the nox option of the GLI, the minimal 2006.0 live-cd, an older live-cd, knoppix? What arch are you using - x86, ~x86, amd64, ~amd64? Are you following the Gentoo Handbook? What have you done so far?
Post the output of the following:
Code:
# ls -l /
# ls -l /usr/lib/portage/bin/ebuild.sh

I am doing a stage 1/3 install. I have successfully used this method on several different machines for about 1.5 years. I am using the 2006 amd cd.
I just get started installing. I got into the chroot environment, and tried to emerge portage. Then the error message is returned. In my make.conf
I have:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~AMD64"
CFLAGS -march=nocona -O2 -pipe -mmmx -msse -msse2 -msse3 -ftrace -fforce-addr -fweb -mfpmath=sse
CXXFLAGS -fno-enforce-eh-specs

I compared the output from this non-working system for:

ls -l /
ls -l /usr/lib/prtage/bin/ebuild.sh
ls -l /etc/make.conf
ls -l /etc/portage/package.use, package.mask, package.unmask, package.keywords

with a known working system, and they are the same.

Since I'm on the first part of the installation, and only have CLI available, I'm not sure how to get dmesg, emerge --info, lspci, or any other information pasted
to this messege. Help doing that would also be a big help.
Thanks

If you're trying to install using Bob P's Stage1/3 method, why don't you take a look at his JackAss! project? It will take you less time to get up and running.
Either way, Bob has never suggested your CFLAGS! You could try again using the following CFLAGS:
Code:
CFLAGS -march=nocona -O2 -pipe -ftracer

Do you still get the same error? If so, look at the output of ls -l /.

Bob won't answer my question because I'm using AMD64. He only deals with x86. I've tried using the bear minimum cflags of
-march=nocona -O2 -pipe but still have the same problem. This porblem will probably be a hard one to fix because of the
small ammount of returns I got from google when I posted it there. No one seams to have had this exact problem before. All of my
other machines have compiled gentoo fine ,well if there was a problem it was usually fixed within a couple of days. this makes me
think something is going on with what is being downloaded from emerg --sync or the current portage snapshot. But I'm not sure though.
Anyway could you tell me how to cut and paste during a fresh install to this forum. I see people are doing it on these fourms. It would
make submiting output information a lot easier. Plus I would be gaining some needed skills.

Thanks,

You need to start gpm in the live-cd
Code:
# /etc/init.d/gpm start

Then you select the text with the mouse in one screen and paste it on the other pressing at the same time the left and the right mouse buttons.
Please post 5 to 10 lines before the error and the procedure you're using to install Gentoo on your system.

PS - You're right, Bob doesn't support x86_64. I'm sorry for refering JackAss!, but I wasn't taking into account that you're using a 64-bits system.

Since you are at the very beginning of a new install, maybe you could try the other alternative installation method, namely Fiordland Install ?

You can read more about why it was invented in the first place in this resurrected thread. Pay attention to the Bad Penguin and warrens posts. Especially this test is... wow... intriguing!
Warning: referred material is flammatory, but don't get too heated - it just really happens in Gentoo sometimes... ;)
