Module ath_pci not found / interface ath0 doesn't exist

I've been having trouble getting a new install on my Laptop to recogize my WG511T wireless card. I have installed madwifi-ng and wpa-supplicant and configured them. I can't modprobe ath_pci (I get module not found).

I had ath_pci before, but I switched my kernel to 2.6.16-gentoo-r4 and even though I've enabled wireless in my new kernel , I no longer have that module.

Any suggestions?

every time you emerge/use new kernel, you have to rebuild external modules. emerge module-rebuild then
