Ok I am looking to change the partitions on my hard drive I duel boot with windows and I need more space for linux. So here is what i have now:
Code:

hdb1  32M   boot partiton(staying unchanged)
hdb2  2048M swap partiton(also going to be unchanged)
hdb3 ~30G   ext3 partiton(this is the one I would like to make bigger)
hdb4 ~225G  ntfs partiton(the one I would like to make smaller)

I would like to make the partitons similer to this:
Code:

hdb1  32M   boot partiton
hdb2  2048M swap partiton
hdb3 ~100G  ext3 partiton(added 70G)
hdb4 ~155G  ntfs partiton(removed 70G)

Is this possible with out losing any data on the hdb3 partiton?(I have backed up the hdb4 partiton on another hard drive)
Or will I have to use the extended partitons?
Also are there any key files I should back up that would make reinstalling gentoo easier(eg make.conf) in case the worst does happen?

Thanks in advance for any help. :D

Just remove the old hdb3 & hdb4 partitions and after that make them that size you want, you 'll just need to be sure about that hdb3 starts at the very same sector as it was.
Then you've to make that ext3 filesystem to fill that your new larger partition with resize2fs /dev/hdb3 and after that make the new ntfs to hdb4 and copy that W-system back (that's your own problem).

The things you'd backup from your Gentoo system is the whole /etc and maybe some configuration files from /home :?

I have done this earlier, and had no data loss: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-400142-highlight-.html
