Hello, I see this error message when I boot linux.

Code:
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
VP_IDE: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 89
VP_IDE: detected chipset, but driver not compiled in!
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device 00:11.1. Please try using pci=bi osirq.
VP_IDE: chipset revision 6
VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xb400-0xb407, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xb408-0xb40f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio

Also my performance in X is terrible when doing HD copying. The cursor hangs every few seconds, and typed text lags for a few seconds too. Could this error have something to do with it? I'm running gnome on an Athlon XP 1800 so surely it could handle the load?

this mean that your kernel don t have the right driver compiled for your hd controller.
enable it in your kernel , then do : hdparm -c1 -d1 /dev/your_disk.
it should speed up your hd a bit :)

right, but how do i go about finding out what ide controller i have? I have an ASUS A7V333 mb, with athlon xp 1800+
Says VIA KT333, is that the controller?

EDIT: did some forum searching... the VIA82Cxxx is the right kernel option, with "USE DMA by Default" also enabled. By doing this I get the following hdparm output
Code:
/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 geometry     = 4866/255/63, sectors = 78177792, start = 0

without using any hdparm options at bootime, the kernel sets it all. One thing that bothers me though (hdparm -I /dev/hda);
Code:
ATA device, with non-removable media
        Model Number:       MAXTOR 6L040J2
        Serial Number:      662217246890
        Firmware Revision:  A93.0500
Standards:
        Used: ATA/ATAPI-5 T13 1321D revision 1
        Supported: 5 4 3 2 & some of 6

some of 6 yet my hd is set to use UDMA mode 6.

Code:

 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 *udma6

hda: 78177792 sectors (40027 MB) w/1819KiB Cache, CHS=4866/255/63, UDMA(133)

could this be a problem?

I think it's your controller , yes.
the udma6 thing should not be a problem .
