1. depends on what you want. If you want kde bare-bones then emerge the base. If you want most of the default KDE stuff then emerge kde.
2. No, KDE doesn't depend on the kernel directly. |

you may also want to install split ebuilds : kdebase-meta or kde-meta.
this way you'll be able to remove the kde components if you realize you don't need some of them. |

1. If you wish to use the binaries on the package-cd for kde, you will need to emerge either kde-meta or kdebase-meta. kde-meta contains all of the K Desktop Environment except for some development programs, kdebase-meta contains just the basic kde packages.
2. emerge --depclean will not clean up the kernel's source in /usr/src. If you want to remove the old versions, run "emerge --prune -av whichever-sources" |
