1. depends on what you want. If you want kde bare-bones then emerge the base. If you want most of the default KDE stuff then emerge kde.

2. No, KDE doesn't depend on the kernel directly.

you may also want to install split ebuilds : kdebase-meta or kde-meta.

this way you'll be able to remove the kde components if you realize you don't need some of them.

1. If you wish to use the binaries on the package-cd for kde, you will need to emerge either kde-meta or kdebase-meta. kde-meta contains all of the K Desktop Environment except for some development programs, kdebase-meta contains just the basic kde packages.

2. emerge --depclean will not clean up the kernel's source in /usr/src. If you want to remove the old versions, run "emerge --prune -av whichever-sources"
