well, either you go through the menuconfig route and deactivate everything you deem unnecessary, or you'll have to live with modules you don't need. it's pretty much as simple as that. genkernel simply tries to compile as much as possible and the coldplug/hotplug scripts will try to get everything loaded for your hardware, thus it's logical to see lots of modules in lsmod.
i suggest you take the .config of that genkernel kernel and then do the make menuconfig thing and deactivate everything you're sure you won't need. _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

I think if you want a lighter kernel, you're going to have to do a manual configuration instead of using genkernel. Take a look at the Handbook chapter on building your kernel and see the instructions for a manual install. |

some programs that I think the installation guide tells you to install. to put it (very) simple, coldplug will initialise your hardware upon boot, and hotplug does the same during normal operation of the system with hot-pluggable devices (usb sticks, sata drives, ...).
[I know that's not 100% accurate, but it should be accurate enough in this case] _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

uhm, no, hotplug and colplug are limited to the modules the kernel provides, they just make sure the right modules are loaded _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

that is correct, hotplug can somewhat be connected to plug&play....
whether something will show up or not will depend on your desktop environment and how you set things up. I believe KDE can be told to do something when usb devices are plugged in, at least that works on my girllfriend's computer (which uses kubuntu) _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland
