Hello all,

As a quick background, I am very new to Linux in general. I had installed a few distro's in the past, but only ever used them for a few days before my will broke and I converted back to Windows. I was thinking about trying Linux again, and at the advice of a friend, went with the Gentoo distribution. Rather than using an install CD, I did everything manually in an attempt to learn more and gain a better overall understanding of how Linux works. I basically followed the Gentoo Handbook all the way through, and now have KDE running well. However, I am having issues getting my wireless networking to work.

After doing some searching and research, I learned that because my Toshiba laptop has an Atheros brand wireless card built into it, I would have to use the Madwifi drivers to be able to get it to work properly. I emerge'd madwifi-ng and madwifi-tools, as well as wireless-tools. Following the instructions at madwifi.org, after the emerge was finished, I attempted to run modprobe ath_pci. This returned the following;

Quote:
WARNING: Error inserting wlan (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r3/net/wlan.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting ath_rate_sample (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r3/net/ath_rate_sample.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting ath_pci (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r3/net/ath_pci.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

I ran a few searches on these forums and found a few posts where people were having the same issue. Some of the suggestions were to ensure that Wireless LAN support was enabled in the kernel. It was not, so I enabled this and recompiled. After doing this, I re-emerge'd madwifi-ng and madwifi-tools and attempted the modprobe again but was greeted with the same error. I should note, however, that while re-compiling the kernel I received some errors at the end stating;

Quote:
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r6/net/ath_pci.ko needs unknown symbol ieee80211_ioctl
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r6/net/wlan_ccmp.ko needs unknown symbol crypto_alloc_tfm
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r6/net/wlan_ccmp.ko needs unknown symbol crypto_free_tfm

I found another post with this exact error which suggested trying;

Quote:
cd /lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r6/net
rm *
emerge madwifi-driver

I did this as well, but still received the same error when trying to do the modprobe. Being a very new user to Linux, I am fairly lost at this point. I understand everything that I've been doing, but do not know what to turn to now. If anyone could provide me with any help or insight it would be greatly appreciated. Also, for reference I have added the results of running lspci and dmesg below. Thank you very much.

From what I understand, because my particular card isn't directly supported by the kernel all I should have to enable is Wireless LAN support with none of the particular options under it selected. If this is the case, then yes, it is enabled in the kernel.
