my /etc/hosts file contains 192.168.0.2 (this computers IP)
When I try to ping my samba server
ping GentooLinuxServer
ping: unknown host GentooLinuxServer
I can ping localhost, 192.168.0.2 and my routers address, 192.168.0.1, but none of the other computers on the network.
I also can't see any of the other computers on the network using lisa, which I'm almost certain is configured correctly. |

How does your machine know that "GentooLinuxServer" is 192.168.0.2? The answer is .. it doesn't. You have to tell your machine that "GentooLinuxServer" resolves to 192.168.0.2 This is in your /etc/hosts file. Which you'll write

Thanks! I can now ping that, and by adding my brothers laptop to /etc/hosts I can now ping that as well (but for some reason couldn't before, even by ip address?) Maybe its a deal with the firewall. And now I can see my own computer in smb://, which is progress 
Should localhost be this computers ip address, or the routers address? |

| localhost and also 127.0.0.1 are loopback IP's and is the IP address of the local machine. Example, pinging localhost or 127.0.0.1 is the same as pinging yourself. So obviously if your on 192.168.0.1 you'll be pinging 192.168.0.1 and if your on your brothers machine and typed it you'll be ping that |
